When Esti Legard moves to the island of Cariba, the last thing she wants is to be followed by the shadow of her father, a world renowned actor, who recently passed away. She attends a theater school, where she makes more enemies than friends. Esti finds solace in a mysterious boy, named Alan. Alan won’t take off his mask, or tell her his full name. Is Alan a “Jumbee” like Esti’s friend thinks, or is he something much more sinister? His passion for Shakespeare wins Esti’s friendship…but they soon become something a little more than friends. To complicate matters further, Esti falls for the “bad boy”, Rafe Solomon. Her friend from school warned her that Rafe has dated almost all the girls in the school. When accidents happen to students who have upset Esti, she starts to wonder if Alan really is a Jumbee, or if it’s just a coincidence.
Keyes writes in a haunting, and slightly Phantom of the Opera-ish style. This was an excellent book, and I highly recommend it.
