Fourteen-year-old Cecilia is not your average princess. Since her parents' murderers are still at large, she has hidden in a remote village her entire life. By day she is a normal peasant girl, doing chores, wearing rags, or fishing with her best friend, Harper. By night she studies palace protocol and everything she'll need to know as princess. No one in the kingdom knows that Cecilia is the true princess, thanks to "Princess" Desmia, her decoy. When it becomes apparent that the murderers have discovered her whereabouts, Cecilia and Harper flee to the capital to reclaim her rightful throne. Upon arriving at the palace, however, Cecilia and Harper are imprisoned by Desmia, who obviously has never been informed of Cecilia's existence...
This is one of my favorite books. I wouldn't recommend it to you if you don't like princess stories, although Palace of Mirrors is definitely not your average fairy tale. Haddix intertwines elements of your classic fairy tale with romance, action, and slight mystery. It is very fast paced and has a dramatic climax and an immensely surprising ending.
